          Dawn E. Hewitt

          Director of Community Engagement

Dawn joined the Wildflower Center in 2018, coming from just up the road at UT’s Blanton Museum of Art. While at the Blanton, Dawn was integral to planning and executing the many events surrounding the opening of Ellsworth Kelly’s “Austin.”

She has that rare combination of being both a critical and creative thinker, skills that were honed while earning a bachelor’s in art history at The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s in art history, with a focus on museum studies and certificate in women and gender studies, from Texas Christian University.

As the Director of Community Engagement, Dawn creates connections through events, exhibitions and IDEA initiatives. She focuses her work on the belief that people can be brought together through shared experiences. As a strong woman from Northeast Texas and a fellow graduate of Marshall High School, Dawn feels an indelible connection with Lady Bird Johnson, who also believed that, by creating beautiful spaces and experiences, one can change the world in positive ways.

Dawn finds the following words of Mrs. Johnson’s (from a 1967 speech) particularly inspiring and true: “The environment is where we all meet, where all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.”
